Mithun Manhas: From Delhi's Cricket Star to BCCI President
Mithun Manhas, the former Delhi cricket captain, is set to make history as the next president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). At 45, Manhas could become the first uncapped cricketer—someone who never represented India at the international level—to lead the country's most influential cricket organization. His nomination marks a significant shift toward valuing experienced domestic players in cricket administration.
A Distinguished Domestic Career
Born on October 12, 1979, in Jammu, Manhas began his cricket journey with Delhi in the 1997–98 season. Over his career, he played 157 first-class matches, scoring 9,714 runs at an average of 45.82, including 27 centuries. He also participated in over 130 List A games and 91 T20s, showcasing his versatility and consistency across formats.
Despite his domestic success, Manhas never played for the Indian national team. Nevertheless, his leadership qualities and cricketing insight made him a key figure in Delhi cricket, where he captained the team for much of the 2000s.
Transition to Coaching and Administration
After retirement, Manhas smoothly transitioned into coaching and administrative roles. In 2017, he served as assistant coach for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He also worked as a batting consultant for the Bangladesh Under-19 team and later became the assistant coach for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2019 and Gujarat Titans in 2022.
Additionally, Manhas served as the Director of Cricket Operations for the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA), helping develop cricket infrastructure and nurturing young talent in the region.
Rise to BCCI Presidency
Following Roger Binny's tenure as BCCI president, a series of deliberations among senior administrators took place. Mithun Manhas emerged as the frontrunner for the position and officially filed his nomination on September 21, 2025. He is widely expected to be elected during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 28, 2025, possibly unopposed.
Manhas's nomination reflects a broader trend in Indian cricket administration, focusing on experience, leadership, and a deep understanding of domestic cricket.
Looking Ahead
Mithun Manhas’s journey from a local cricketer to the head of the BCCI symbolizes a new era for Indian cricket. His extensive domestic career, combined with coaching and administrative experience, equips him to lead the board effectively. Cricket enthusiasts and professionals alike will be watching closely as he steps into this pivotal role, aiming to guide Indian cricket to new heights.
